Intervention: Help a loved one overcome addiction

Many of the men and women in our ARC program have little to no work history. Work therapy helps them build the habits they’ll need to use in the workforce. While it may help them acquire skills they can leverage into gainful employment after the program, the focus of Adult Rehabilitation Center programming is rehabilitation. Employment is not promised to graduates, but employment is considered very important to the success of ARC graduates in reentering society and living productive lives.

When experiencing a craving, many people have a tendency to remember only the positive effects of the drug and forget the negative consequences. Therefore, you may find it helpful to remind yourself that you really won’t feel better if you use and that you stand to lose a lot. Sometimes it is helpful to have these consequences sober house listed on a small card that you keep with you. Be upfront about your history of drug use when seeking medical treatment. Instead it may be preferable to use terms such as “resumed,” or experienced a “recurrence” of substance use or substance use disorder symptoms. A linguistic prescription structuring sentences to name the person first and the condition or disease from which they suffer, second. It is recommended to use “person first” language; instead of describing someone as an “addict”, for instance, to describe them as a person with, or suffering from, addiction or a substance use disorder. People are psychologically dependent when a drug is so central to their thoughts, emotions and activities that the need to continue its use becomes a craving or compulsion despite negative consequences. While these substances are very different from each other, they all strongly activate the reward center of your brain and produce feelings of pleasure. It typically involves an overpowering desire to use the substance, increased tolerance to the substance and/or withdrawal symptoms when you stop taking the substance. The Salvation Army does not solicit government funding for the Adult Rehabilitation Centers. The charitable program at the ARCs is made possible through the generosity of people like you who donate goods that are sold in our 429 ARC-affiliated Family and Thrift Stores. Those struggling with addiction are prone to putting themselves in risky or dangerous situations, not to mention the negative physical effects of drugs and alcohol. Addiction is a progressive disease that does not get better on its own. Talking to your loved one about your concerns doesn’t guarantee they’ll change, but it may plant a seed.
